ANCCE Launches a New Operational Group: GO EquigenIA

ANCCE has launched a new Operational Group known as GO EquigenIA. It is a recently granted project that reinforces our commitment with innovation applied to improve genetics and the genetic selection of Purebred Spanish Horses. Our partners in this project include RFEAGAS (Spain’s Federation for Select Livestock Associations and the technological firm Nunsys, in addition to the participation of other bodies, such as the University of Sevilla, the University of Cordoba, all coordinated by the innovation strategy consultancy firm Inneara.

The name EQUIGENIA stems from combining the words Equine, Gen/Genomics, and AI to reflect the scientific and technological basis of this initiative. This project was assessed from among more than 200 other proposals, to attain one of the highest scores. Thanks to this, it was approved. Funding was granted by Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAPA) by means of the Resolution Granting Subsidies for the Implementation of Innovative, General Interest  Projects for supra-regional Operational Groups within the framework of the European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability (AEI-Agri), under Spain’s CAP Strategic Plan (PEPAC).

The objective of GO EquigenIA is to develop a digital platform based on artificial intelligence (AI) that allows breeders to select the best matings from among their breeding stock using their horses’ genetic and genomic data. The tool will operate as an interactive chat; breeders can consult about the interpretation and use of this data to receive clear, straightforward answers. The system will translate complex technical information into accessible, easy-to-understand language that will support decision-making within the PRE Breeding Program.

Moreover, this tool will allow users to perform simulations and predictive calculations of progeny based on the selection criteria defined by each breeder. Therefore, it will make it easier to select the most adequate matings based on their desired objectives.

Using this tool is a major leap forward in the application of technological innovation to the equine sector. It translates into economic and competitive benefits for horse breeders and the sector in general, as it promotes greater and more effective marketing of Purebred Spanish Horses both nationally and internationally.
