Fifth place for Claudio Castillla riding Icaro MG at the CDI Freestyle in Doha

Despite the horse being the youngest in the arena, this pair was outstanding thanks to the average earned in Grand Prix Kür to music (74.000%)

This week, the international focus was on Dressage in Qatar; specifically, in Doha. The equestrian crown jewel of Qatar and Al Shaqab is CHI AL SHAQAB, the first 5-star equestrian completion in the Middle East and Asia. The event was held from the 7 th to the 9 th of March.

Since its initial inauguration in 2013, this international event is one of the five equestrian competitions that hosts three disciplines at the same time: Show Jumping, Dressage and Para-equestrian. Spain was on hand for this first edition with important riders including Claudio Castilla, Juan Matute, Borja Carrascosa and Nicole Vázquez and a Purebred Spanish Horse Icaro MG, owned by Hierro MG ESP and bred by Yeguada Candau. This horse was outstanding for the average obtained: 74.000% (its record to date), which placed him fifth on the roster.  Considering it was his first five-star CDI and he was the youngest horse in the arena, this result is truly noteworthy.

Friday saw the Grand Prix; the first Spaniard to enter the arena was Claudio Castilla riding Icaro MG. They earned a score of 69.891%, thus placing seventh. Undoubtedly, one of the exercises that the judges like most was the passage; that earned an 8, and several 7.5 as well as the piaffe-passage transitions that garnered a 7.5.

This morning, the pair ran the Kür, where they executed an excellent test in which they surpassed the own record average to surpass the 70% barrier. More specifically, 74.000% placed them at the foot of the podium to reach a well-deserved 5 th place.

CHI AL SHAQAB, created in 2013, has developed and grown to become an exclusive event and one of the most outstanding on the world equestrian calendar.
